PITCHER PLANTS OF SABAH

Funnel-shaped pitchers in a variety of form, size and colours often evoke a sense a mystery. Often found in soils poor in nitrogenous compounds, the plants resort to extracting nutrients from insects and small animals that were drowned in the "trecherous" pitchers. These mysterious-looking plants are often the subject of collection and hence some species are endangered.

Borneo has 31 species of pitcher plants. Kinabalu Park alone has 16 species (of which 3 montane species are endemic (Nepenthes villosa, N rajah & N. kinabaluensis).
